Coaching: The Benefits And What To Expect

by Mary-Jo Rigby

Many of my clients have never had career coaching before and feel in the dark about what happens during a typical coaching journey.

The starting point for coaching is often the desire for something to change. This could be:

  • gain clarity on what a person wants to do next.
  • wanting to secure a new job and improve interview performance.
  • returning to work after maternity leave
  • wanting to be more “visible” at work, increasing one’s presence, and having a stronger personal “brand” at work
  • gaining that next promotion

Coaching provides a safe, objective space for individuals to grow and develop in their careers. Taking the time to reflect on one’s values, what is important to you, your uniqueness, and individual strengths.

My coaching sessions start with a strong element of reflection. To move forward, it’s important to take a step back to craft the path you want.

A typical first session starts with co-creating what you want to walk away with from coaching. We work together to define the goals and changes you want to happen.

  • What has brought you to coaching? And why is this important to you now?
  • What are some of the obstacles you are facing?
  • What would you like to happen?

You are investing your time; it’s important that you see the changes you are looking for!

Coaching stems from the belief that individuals are already fully complete, capable, and resourceful. This means that if you are working with an accredited and qualified coach, they are hopefully asking you the right questions to unlock your full potential.

Think about top sportspeople, they all work with a coach to support them to perform at their best, both mentally and physically.

On a personal note, I noticed early on in my career within large corporations such as GE, Visa, Nokia, and Santander that those individuals who were progressing somewhat effortlessly had all worked with a coach to get them to where they wanted to be.

I have worked with a coach at times of transition in my own career and can wholeheartedly say that I would not have done as well in my career without the benefits of some coaching.

If you are interested in having a conversation about anything you would like support with or a change in your career, I would be delighted to hear from you!
